Phot-o' the Day: White Llama in the White City, Popayan, Colombia


Popayan, Colombia, is known as "La Cuidad Blanca," "the White City," because of its gleaming white buildings. It's also reputed to be one of the best places on earth (after Seville, Spain) to experience Holy Week, Santa Semana, coming up in April. I was there on a September afternoon to catch a bus to Colombia's Zona Cafetera after visiting San Agustin.

And what did I see immediately upon entering Centro Popayan? A gleaming white llama. Relaxing in the main plaza, Parque Caldas. The gleaming white building in the background is the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption Catedral, or La Nuestra Señora de La Asunción.

I toned down the light so that the Cathedral Basilica would not totally wash out in the transformation from full color to B&W.  This is the photo in natural light:
