Up to 15,000ft-plus Above Sea Level Via TelefériQo

It's a long way up
The final stop of the day was to the TelefériQo, the cable car that takes you up more than 5000 feet in elevation (over a mile) from the City of Quito (9,100 feet above sea level) to the top of a mountain that is over 15,000 feet high.

How high is 15,000 feet above sea level? Mt. Whitney in California, the highest point in the lower 48 states, is 14,505 feet high. This is more than 500 feet higher.

A ticket to ride was only $8. It was a bit disconcerting, however, that they took my temperature (laser thermometer to the forehead) and squirted me down with hand sanitizer before letting me board.

Soon I was on the 18-minute ascent.

Unfortunately, at the high elevation, during the rainy season, the top of the mountain was completely enshrouded within a cloud. Nothing to see. The view on the ascent, before we disappeared into the cloud, was incredible.

Back to earth.
